How long does a YouTube edit take?

A standard 10-minute YouTube video takes 4 to 8 hours of actual editing. Calendar time is a different question: most freelancers deliver a first cut in 3 to 7 days, dedicated services in 48 to 72 hours, and a same-day turnaround is rush pricing everywhere.

The gap between hours-of-work and days-to-delivery is where most frustration lives. Your editor is not spending seven days on your video. They are fitting six hours of your work between other clients.

These are working hours for a competent editor who has your footage, your brief and your brand assets in hand. Every one of those three being missing adds time before editing even starts.

Realistic delivery windows

  • Marketplace freelancer: 5 to 7 days, sometimes longer if they are juggling a queue.
  • Regular freelancer you have a relationship with: 3 to 5 days, and they already know your style.
  • Subscription editing service: 48 to 72 hours, because capacity is planned rather than opportunistic.
  • Agency: 5 to 10 days. Slower, because the work passes through more approvals.
  • In-house editor: same day to 2 days, at the cost of a salary.

The four things that quietly add days

1. A vague brief

By far the largest cause of delay. "Make it engaging" produces a first cut that misses, then a full re-edit. Ten minutes spent noting the goal, the tone and the must-keep moments routinely saves two days at the other end.

2. Disorganised footage

Unlabelled files, duplicate takes and separate audio that is not synced can add several hours before the edit begins. Naming your files and flagging the good takes is unglamorous and enormously effective.

3. Slow feedback

The edit is often not what is slow. You are. A cut delivered Tuesday and reviewed Friday has lost three days that no editor can recover. Timestamped comments beat a paragraph of general notes, because the editor knows exactly which frame you mean.

4. Revision rounds

Each round realistically adds 24 to 48 hours. Most projects settle in two. If yours routinely runs to five, the brief is the problem, not the editor.

How to get it faster without paying rush rates

  • Send footage already trimmed to the takes you want to use.
  • Supply a brand kit once: fonts, colours, logo, lower-third style, so it never has to be asked for again.
  • Reference a video you like and say specifically what you like about it.
  • Review in one sitting and consolidate all notes into a single pass.
  • Work with the same editor repeatedly. By the third video they need half the direction.

What ExpertPitch delivers

A first cut within 48 to 72 hours of the brief, not of the invoice. Feedback lands on the exact timestamp, revisions run until you approve, and long-form plans include a rush 24-hour option. Turnaround is built into the base rate rather than sold as a premium.
